Before reading any further, try replacing the batteries and calibrating the scale.

These two issues alone account for the majority of our returned scales and are not covered by our 10 year limited warranty on US scales. Try these steps before submitting the scale for a warranty claim as it would likely be denied if it was one of these issues. This would ultimately lead to higher shipping costs for you. We do not want you, our valued customer, to pay unnecessarily high shipping costs when the problem can probably be solved without the scale leaving your possession.

What does the American Scale 10 Year Limited Warranty cover and/or not cover?

Our warranty covers any manufacturing defects in material or herefor our full guarantee.

What type of maintenance is required to keep my scale in optimal weighing condition?

Scales are precision instruments that are sensitive to environmental changes and foreign matter (e.g. dust, dirt, moisture, etc.). Try to keep your scale free of foreign matter, as this can get into the scale's electronics, cause erroneous readings and eventually lead to a total failure. Avoid prolonged exposure to extreme heat or cold. Do not keep your scale in your car or other places where extreme temperatures could affect the device. Allow your scale to adjust to room temperature before weighing. If your scale is too hot or too cold, it will "drag". In this case the weights are continuously increased or decreased as the load cell adapts to the ambient temperature (e.g. 0.1, 0.2, 0.3…). Routinely changing batteries and calibrating the scale also prevents false readings and helps maintain scale integrity.

My screen says "out2" or "our2". What does that mean?

This specific error code means that your scale needs to be calibrated with the required calibration weight for that specific scale model. Follow the step-by-step calibration instructions in the user manual to correctly calibrate your scale. Click here to be redirected to the product manuals. Calibration is not covered by our limited warranty and any scale returned to us for warranty service that is not calibrated will be rejected.

My scale is wobbly and showing erratic readings. Why is this?

Digital scales are particularly sensitive to external interference and power fluctuations. External interference can be caused by vibration, loud noise, temperature changes, drafts, and electronic interference (including cell phones and other wireless devices). Only use your scale in a stable environment on a level, vibration-free table. A stable environment means a stable scale. This will ensure your reading is the most accurate.

My screen shows "O_Ld. What does that mean?

This error code indicates that your scale has been overloaded with excessive weight. Your scale is a precision instrument that should always be treated with care, regardless of brand. If you place 500 grams of weight on a scale that is rated for a maximum capacity of 200 grams, you are likely to damage or deform the load cell. Do not place the scale in a location where more weight than intended will be placed on the scale. The plastic cover only protects the scale to a limited extent. Overloading the scale is not covered by our warranty and any related claims will likely be denied.

What if I just received my scale and there is no power or the backlight is dim?

Batteries are installed in some models of our scales before shipment from the factory. Try replacing the batteries in the device with a fresh set of batteries. We use high quality batteries in the manufacture of our scales, however batteries tend to run out during storage. Therefore, as a customer, you often wonder if you have received a faulty scale. Battery failures are a common problem that can be fixed very easily. Batteries are not covered by our warranty and any claim regarding this issue will likely be rejected. If after replacing the batteries the device still does not have power, you will need to send the scale to our warranty department for repair or replacement. If using AC power, unplug the adapter and make sure the scale is running on batteries only. If so, you may have a faulty adapter. Contact our warranty department for a replacement adapter.

My screen only shows parts of the numbers. How can I fix this?

"Partial digits" are usually the result of a loose connection between the display and the circuit board. Often this connection is broken during the submission process. On some of our scales the display and circuit board is not accessible and must be returned to our warranty department for repair. If you can access the screen and circuit board, make sure the connection is secure. This will likely fix this problem.

I'm trying to weigh very light loads by slowly adding small amounts and the screen doesn't seem to get any bigger as I add the item. Is my scale broken?

Some digital scales come with a feature called auto zero tracking. This allows the balance to compensate for vibrations or air currents that can falsify the weighing result. This usually works like this: when an item weighing less than half a division is placed on the tray, the scale zeroes it and maintains a stable reading of zero. For example, if you have a scale with a resolution of 0.5g and you place a 0.3g object on the platform, the reading will not change. If you put another item weighing 0.3g on the platform, the display will not change even if the total weight exceeds the resolution of 0.5g. Thus it is possible to continuously add a small weight to the platform without the reading changing by 0.0g. NIST recommends that you purchase a scale with a display resolution that is at least half that of the smallest object you intend to weigh. However, if you are weighing screws that weigh 1 gram each, you need to choose a scale with a resolution of at least 0.5 g. My scale is not working and the packaging has visible damage. What should I do?

Unlike cell phones or game controllers, which can be knocked over and still work, scales are delicate instruments that need to be handled with care. Consumers are used to throwing their phones and products in a briefcase and allowing them to be bumped and moved. This leads to irreparable damage to the components of a scale. If you believe your scale was damaged in transit, please contact us immediately and we will file a claim with the carrier and send you a replacement unit.
