Why store and share research with LibraData?

Datasets can be submitted to LibraData (UVA's local Dataverse repository:http://dataverse.lib.virginia.edu)Secure them and make them available globally. Since LibraData is intended to be a repository of complete works in electronic format, similar to how physical libraries are repositories of complete works in print format, the dataset must be complete in a way that researchers wish to preserve permanently.LibraData is not intended to provide storage for work in progress.

Research data management is a complex process, especially given recent mandates from federal funding agencies. on the websiteData Management Consulting Groupuniversity library. Many journals, publishers, and funding agencies require researchers to deposit replicated datasets in public repositories. LibraData helps researchers meet this requirement by supporting the archiving of replicated datasets, making this particular type of data easy to find for reuse by other researchers to verify that research can be replicated without having to contact study authors. verifyBest Practices for Shipping and Documenting Replicated Datasets.

Who can submit datasets to LibraData?

Any university employee (faculty) or student can submit a dataset to LibraData. Note that UVA owns intellectual property rights, including data generated using significant University resources. As such, researchers may not be able to claim sole ownership of their data, and may need to consult universities before putting datasets into Libra. See instructions forData Rights and Responsibilities GuideFor more information or inquiriesVice President of ResearchGuidance on whether you can provide your data through Libra.

Consider whether other researchers or colleagues have authority over the release of this data, such as others involved in grants, research activities, or laboratories at UVA or other institutions. If the answer to this question is yes, then you need their permission to deposit data into Libra.

What can be deposited into LibraData?

Many types of data are suitable for LibraData repositories. Examples of appropriate data for a repository include:

  • Data already publicly available through another repository
  • Data requested to be made public by the funding body (does not include sensitive or confidential information)
  • Academic data that does not contain sensitive or confidential information

Depositors must in all cases ensure that their submissions do not contain confidential or sensitive information. Sensitive and personally identifiable data is strictly regulated by federal, state and university policies. Remove all confidential or sensitive information, student education records protected under FERPA, and any information prior to submitting the data for public archiving and distributionpersonally identifiable anyoneor thatContains any information classified as highly sensitiveIn accordance with state or federal law or UVA policy.

For these effects, highly confidential dataThis currently includes personal information that, if disclosed, could lead to identity theft, as well as health information that reveals a person's health condition and/or past use of medical services.

you should checkLibra Dataset Repository LicenseNow is the time to better understand the types of data that can be properly housed for public access via Libra. You will also be asked to confirm the following before data storage:

  • You have read the Deposit License and confirm that you have the legal right and permission to make this data publicly available online through LibraData for unrestricted worldwide access.
  • In preparing to publicly archive and distribute data, you have removed any confidential or sensitive information, FERPA-protected student education records, and any informationpersonally identifiable anyoneor thatContains any information classified as highly sensitiveIn accordance with state or federal law or UVA policy.
  • If the submitted work is based on work sponsored or approved by an institution or organization other than UVA, such as the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, or a private sponsor or funder, you represent that you have complied with any rights of inspection, confidentiality, or Other obligations required by the contract or agreement.
  • You represent that you have used reasonable efforts to ensure that the data you submit is accurate.
  • You state that you have thanked other researchers who contributed to the data.

Are there any file type and size restrictions?

Any file format will be accepted. Individual files uploaded by yourself are limited to 6 GB in size. If you have a larger file to upload, contact us.Although all file formats are accepted, please note that some file formats are more likely to remain readable in the future, such as plain text files or files in non-proprietary formats, which are commonly used and most likely use conversion tools. be carefulData Management Consulting Group website for file formats and data typesfor reference only.

How will other users understand my data?

To make your data known to other users, it is recommended that you submit a readme file containing your data. The readme file should be a plain text or PDF file and contain the following types of information, in as much detail as possible:

  • Abstracts include a brief description of the study that generated the dataset, including methods.
  • Provides information about the contents of a specific file if more than one specific file is included in the dataset.
  • Unique and consistent variable names, especially when you submit multiple data files from the same study.
  • Unambiguously identified and defined row and column identifiers.
  • An explanation of the codes and classification scheme used, especially any non-obvious values.
  • The algorithm used to transform the data.
  • File format and software used (including version).
  • End users are required to reference and acknowledge the terms of use of the creator of the data (you).
  • Cite a reference, if you have a specific reference that you want others to use to identify your work.
  • If your data were generated by co-investigators, co-investigators from other laboratories, or co-investigators from other institutions, please provide citation and acknowledgment information.
  • Citation information (if you reused someone else's feed). You must also include a link to the original data file.

Why do I have to accept a deposit license and what is written on it?

While individual facts and observations are not subject to copyright protection and can be copied and reused by anyone, the dataset includes not only observed facts but also expressions that qualify for copyright protection. Accordingly, UVA requires permission from the authors to store, display, and distribute these aspects of the datasets, and the public requires permission to download and reuse them. And because certain aspects of data sets may raise concerns about privacy, confidentiality, and other important legal interests, we require you to declare that your data is free from these potential dangers.

Specifically, a depository license requires you to demonstrate:

  • You have the legal right and permission to disclose this data online globally through Libra.
  • You have removed any confidential or sensitive information, including any personally identifiable information or containing information not required to be disclosed by state or federal law or UVA policy.
  • You have complied with any review rights, confidentiality rights or other obligations under any sponsored research agreement.
  • You have made reasonable efforts to ensure that the data you submit is accurate.
  • It duly acknowledges other researchers who contributed to the data.

The Custodian License acknowledges that you wish to make materials available to the public through LibraData for the purposes ofCC0 license(standard) or your own custom license and allow for University storage. This is a non-exclusive agreement, which means you reserve the right to use your data in any way you want. However, if you use a CC0 license, you give up relatively few rights, and you may have to restrict others' use of copyrighted aspects of the dataset.

Who can access LibraData to search and download projects?
What can LibraData users do with my submitted dataset?

LibraData is an open access repository, meaning anyone can search, view and download content. User needs to acceptterms of usespecified on the LibraData website prior to accessing content. These terms make it clear that use of each dataset is subject to a license chosen by the depositor. standard license,CC0 (public domain dedication),Allows unlimited reuse by anyone with access to the repository. This is consistent with the purpose of open data repositories, which is to encourage the broadest possible reuse of data. You can choose to use a custom license to limit reuse. This will make your data less useful to researchers, but some funders or institutions may require it.

Can I delete or modify datasets that have been added to LibraData?

Because repositories are designed for scholarly work as close to its final or published form as possible, projects cannot be deleted once deposited into Libra. Researchers should only deposit versions in LibraData that they intend to permanently open access to.

If the library determines or learns that a dataset containing non-public sensitive information or data has been deposited, it reserves the option, in its sole discretion, to remove public access to that data. If you, the depositor, become aware of a rights or privacy issue with your data deposit, we ask that you notify us immediately and the library will take appropriate action immediately.

Are articles in LibraData guaranteed to be available forever?

Libraries and ITS are committed to the permanence and sustainability of research housed in Libra. LibraData uses standard data management practices, including backup and security procedures, to provide reasonable assurance that files will continue to be restored over time. Additionally, the UVA library isAcademic Preservation TrustConsortium whose goal is to ensure the preservation of digital library content, including LibraData files. However, as no technology can guarantee permanent access, researchers are encouraged to keep personal copies of their files.

The University reserves the right to remove content deposited that does not comply with the standard termsData Warehouse Licenseor content deemed inappropriate for the public.
